MCS opens new campus chapel

After almost two years of development, Mount Carmel School opened a new campus chapel this week, which was highlighted by a special blessing led by Fr. Ryan Jimenez, the Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa. The opening and blessing were scheduled to coincide with the Catholic church’s annual observance of Holy Week.

In this prayer and blessing, Fr. Ryan said, “It is very fitting that we open and bless this chapel as we prepare for the Easter Tridiuum,” referring to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord. After blessing the chapel, Fr. Ryan added, “This is a very nice chapel, one that can even be used for class masses.”

School president, Galvin Deleon Guerrero, agreed with Fr. Ryan. He said, “Now our students, faculty, staff, and even parents have a quiet and safe place to go to pray and be with the Lord.” Deleon Guerrero added, “While we have always appreciated the opportunity to pray in the Cathedral’s facilities, having this chapel on campus is a special way to uphold our Catholic identity.”

The MCS chapel was funded primarily by campus ministry efforts, both through collections at school masses and a Pray-a-Thon that was held in October last year. The Pray-a-Thon raised over $3,000, which was led by 2nd grade students, who raised over a $1,000 by themselves. Deleon Guerrero’s family also contributed by purchasing the chapel’s altar at an auction held a couple of years ago in honor of the school’s chaplain, Fr. Rey Rosal.

Open during school hours, the chapel is located in the former office of the school president, adjacent to the school’s business office.
