Out of the more than 50 competitors from Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Pohnpei and after several spelling rounds, Ted Pamintuan was one of the six spellers left standing on the stage when he was asked to spell the word “diaphragm.”

After asking the usual questions about the word spellers are allowed to ask the pronouncer such as definition, origin, alternate pronunciation, etc., without obvious hesitation, Pamintuan recited correctly each letter in proper sequence up to the seventh letter. Unfortunately, missing to spell the 8th letter “g” prevented Pamintuan from going further in the competition. The audience’s reaction was of surprise as Pamintuan was able to spell in the previous rounds several words considered far more difficult.

It was first time for the 5th grader from Green Meadow School to compete in the annual Regional Scripps Spelling Bee in Guam. Being among the Top 6 best 2016 Scripps regional spellers is by all measurements a tremendous accomplishment for Pamintuan, for Green Meadow School, for his coach teacher Lorelisa Espiritu, and for his parents, classmates, and friends who gave Pamintuan their full support and encouragement from the time he was named the school’s representative and even after the competition. Congratulations Pamintuan for a great job and to all wonderful people who helped him achieved such an exceptional accomplishment!
