HAGÅTÑA, Guam—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo yesterday visited the Guam Small Business Development Center at the University of Guam.
The Guam SBDC is part of the Pacific Islands SBDC Network, which operates branches in Guam, the CNMI, Palau, Kosrae, Yap and Chuuk. The Network has supported economic development in the region by providing one-on-one counseling and training to local entrepreneurs.
Bordallo has been a consistent supporter of small businesses on Guam. In 2005, she included a provision in the surface transportation reauthorization bill known as the Safe Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) Act that designated all of Guam as a Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Zone. She has also supported the development of strong Small Business Development Centers throughout the nation, including advocating for federal legislation to appropriate strong funding for SBDCs.
Pacific Islands SBDC Network director Casey Jeszenka said, “The Pacific Islands Small Buesiness Development Network serves Guam and five other islands in the Pacific region. I thank Congresswoman Bordallo for her strong support of SBDCs over the years. She has been an advocate for us and we wouldn’t be where we are today without her working in Washington to ensure we receive federal funding to carry out our mission.”
“SBDCs play an important role in supporting and training local entrepreneurs start and maintain businesses in our communities,” said Bordallo. “The Pacific Islands SBDC in Guam has been critical to supporting hundreds of local businesses and they have provided millions of dollar in capital infusions into our economy. Just last year, Guam’s SBDC provided assistance to 148 clients and had infused more than $4 million into the economy through loan assistance and equity injection. I commend Casey Jeszenka and the staff of Guam’s SBDC for their tireless work. I look forward to continue supporting them as help local entrepreneurs begin and improve their businesses.”
