CES Electronics got its first win in the DL Corp Invitational Basketball League Season 5 following a 71-68 victory against Mobil/JP World last Tuesday at the San Antonio court.
Syl Teregeyo played a crucial role in the triumph after scoring 16 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. His and-1 play capped a 15-6 scoring spurt in the first five minutes of the fourth frame and gave CES the lead, 59-58, after falling behind by 8, 44-52, at the end of the third period.
The burly forward later made a reverse layup in the closing seconds of the match to turn a shaky 68-67 advantage to a 70-67 cushion. A split free throw from Lerio Pagarao kept Mobil/JP World in the game and they had a chance to tie the match after CES committed an error, but Sid Quan missed a point-blanked shot.
Jun Tabora also had a split in the ensuing play to bring the lead back to 3 points, 71-68, and the scores remained unchanged as Mobil/JP World failed to cash in on three attempts. Pagarao muffed a reverse layup and then a triple, while Elgene Mangali had an airball from downtown.
Mobil/JP World collapsed in the fourth quarter as it was held to one field goal in the last four minutes of the match.
Meanwhile, Kauila Enterprises earned its second straight win after routing Kalayaan, 86-71.
Kauila got off to a jackrabbit start, taking a 31-16 advantage in the first period and then found its target anew in the second half after slowing down in the second frame.
Ken Viray top-scored for Kauila with his 22 points, while Jorge De Guzman chipped in 17 and Ronald Rueda and Jun Pantaleon contributed 15 and 10, respectively.
Roger Herrera paced Kalayaan with his 27 points, while Sonny Lerio added 24. Only five players scored for Kalayaan, which absorbed its second loss in as many games.
In other results, defending champion San Antonio Patriots snapped their two-game losing skid after defeating Island’s Best Choice, 80-69, last Saturday. In the other match last weekend, Ghasias Brothers slipped past GMI Market, 103-99, to remain unbeaten in two games.
