Bordallo encouraged by new sanctions vs N. Korea
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo yesterday issued the following statement in response to the UN Security Council’s unanimous approval of a resolution that imposes new sanctions against North Korea.
“I am encouraged by the unanimous decision by the UN Security Council to impose new sanctions on the North Korean regime, in response to continued aggressive actions that threaten our allies and broader regional security. This sends a strong and unified message that the international community will not tolerate North Korea’s insistence on developing nuclear capable long range missiles. I am further encouraged that Russia and China supported these sanctions, and hope that they continue to work as responsible partners in holding North Korea accountable for its actions.
“The sanctions package is the most stringent ever imposed against North Korea and will target key leadership and financial institutions that enable development of its nuclear program. In cooperation with the international community, we must hold North Korea accountable for their actions and continue to impose strict costs on the regime to assure our allies and protect our interests and territory, including Guam, in the region.”
