Last Feb. 20, at the Latte Stone Chapel in Kanoa Resort Saipan, 13 students from the Northern Marianas College pledged to distinguish themselves through academic excellence by contributing to the community and the Commonwealth through various community service and leadership activities as members and officers of the Beta Lambda Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

PTK welcomed six new inductees to its ranks—Norlyn Pintor Cabrera, Rebekah Hye Yoon Kim, Teisha Helena Camacho Efraim, Zalbert C. Palma, Shin-Ha Sheena Kang Saures, and Andrew Kim Castillo Villanueva.

Seven new officers were also initiated—Su Jin Jeon (president), Kathleen Ann D. Laurio (vice president), Robert Ishmael Lopez Solis (public relations officer), Roy Luie A. Alegre (recording secretary), Angelray Guerrero (membership secretary), Teisha Helena Camacho Efraim (treasurer), Beda Garcia Mundo (vice president of scholarship), and Rebekah Ji Won Lee (vice president of fellowship).

PTK nominated Rep. Ed Propst (Ind-Saipan) to be their keynote speaker, to which co-advisor Jacqueline Che immediately agreed.

“Congressman Propst has distinguished himself as a champion for education, and a public servant who is committed to service—a commitment that began long before he ran for public office; it will be an honor for him to address our inductees and speak about ‘servant leadership’ and the hallmarks we uphold at PTK,” Che said.

NMC’s acting president Jonathan Liwag, NMC’s Dean of Student Services Leo Pangelinan, Propst and his wife Daisy, and PTK advisors Che and Dr. Brady Hammond were present at the induction ceremony to welcome the new inductees.

Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, the PTK Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development thorough honors, leadership, and service programming.

Currently, PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2.5 million members and 1,275 chapters located in fifty United States and territories as well as Canada and Germany. (PR)
