Northern Marianas Sports Association president Mike White is reminding college-age members federations that deadline for the submission of entries for this year’s volunteer program in the World University Championships is on Monday, Feb. 29.

White is encouraging local federations to submit an application for the WUC, where the International University Sports Federation organizes 34 sporting event spread out throughout the year and hosted by different countries.

WUC assistant Julien Carrel, in an email, said this is the first time that FISU organized the volunteer program, which aims “to give opportunity to worldwide students to experience WUC from the inside being active on a key area of the organization as an international volunteer.”

“May you have students of your country that may still be interested in volunteering for one of these WUCs, please forward them this information and ask them to send us their registration by the end of the month,” Carrel added.

Interested volunteers will only shoulder the airfare going to the country where the WUC event will take place. The local organizing committee will provide accommodation and food. NMSA could assist with the transportation cost, which is subject to board approval.

The first WUC event is cross country in Casino, Italy on March 12 and will be followed by cycling in Tagaytay City, Philippines from March 23 to 27. FISU’s world championships will stretch to December with the martial arts of sambo in Larnaca, Cyprus from Dec. 9 to 11.

FISU is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 2004, it has organized 34 WUC sporting events that attracted thousands of student athletes from more than 150 countries around the world.

Archery, badminton, baseball, beach volleyball, bridge, chess, cross country, cycling, equestrian, flat water canoeing, floorball, futsal, golf, handball, field hockey, karate, match racing, ski orienteering, rowing, rugby 7s, sailing, sport shooting, softball, squash, taekwondo, triathlon, white water canoeing, waterskiing, weightlifting, woodball, wrestling, 3×3 basketball, American football, boxing, canoe sprint, netball, rowing, speed skating, and sport climbing, are FISU’s WUC events.
