Fifty-five senior students from three high schools on Saipan—Kagman, Marianas, and Saipan Southern high schools—earned their certificates from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute after successfully completing the hospitality program.

They received their globally recognized AHLEI certificates last Tuesday night in a simple ceremony held at the Royal Taga Hall of the Saipan World Resort. They are the fourth group of students that successfully completed the program since it started in 2014.

Maureen Sebangiol, who handled the administrative side of the program under Island Training Solutions, said those who have completed the course could now get hired once they graduate. The course also credits as one semester of elective credits.

“The program is specifically for seniors where they are trained in order to get in the job market pool. If there are not enough high school seniors, then the program accepts juniors. Seniors who complete the program could get hired quickly since they are trained under the AHLEI course,” said Sebangiol.

The AHLEI certification course is provided in cooperation with the CNMI Public School System and the Latte Training Academy. Students, juniors or seniors, who completed the AHLEI program and received the globally recognized certification that could secure employment in the hospitality industry.

PSS funds the program where 25 students each from KHS, MHS, and SSHS can be admitted. The program started with 17 students from the three high schools in 2014.

The course is part of the curriculum of the normal school semester and is held after school on each of the three high schools. It involves nine hours of classroom instruction with outside reading per week.

The instructors have experience and background in the hospitality industry. Larry Lee, Tyce Mister, and Kanae Quinn were the instructors for KHS, MHS, and SSHS, respectively.

Students under the program earn the opportunity of “job-shadowing” that provides hands-on training in different departments in the hotels or resorts on Saipan. They also learn about resume writing, interview skills, and job search.
