Torres heads to DC; names new special assistant to admin
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has flown stateside to attend meetings with U.S. Capitol and White House officials to discuss issues affecting the CNMI and meantime has announced a new member of his Cabinet, according to statements from the Office of the Governor yesterday.
“Governor Torres will have the opportunity to discuss workforce development relative to current development needs prior to and after 2019,” said press secretary Ivan Blanco yesterday, referring to the 2019 date when the local contract worker program expires.
Torres is set to attend the 2016 Senior Plenary Session of the Interagency Group on Insular Areas, or IGIA, on Feb. 22. The meeting gathers insular leaders to make recommendations to the President every year on federal program and policies affecting the islands, and will take place at the White House with a focus mainly on economic policy and development.
“In addition, governor Torres will discuss the agenda with federal officials for the requested 902 talks [or direct consultation] with the White House,” Blanco added.
Meantime, Torres and Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog have appointed chief of parole, Shirley Camacho-Ogumoro, as the special assistant for administration replacing Esther S. Fleming.
Her appointment becomes effective early next month.
The continuing reorganization comes after members of the cabinet and special assistants submitted their courtesy resignations to Torres as part of the ongoing transition period following the passing of late governor Eloy S. Inos in December.
In an email, Torres said he and Hocog are pleased with the new appointment.
“This unique position serves as the conduit with which to connect all departments, agencies, the general public, and the private sector with the administration’s plans and goals,” Torres said. “I know Shirley is a perfect fit and will be an added asset to this administration. I ask for everyone’s usual support and cooperation as she transitions into this position. Acting governor Hocog and I appreciate her accepting this appointment.”
