CNMI Gov. Ralph DLG Torres signed last Thursday a proclamation declaring February as Parent Leadership Month in time for the celebration of the 49th anniversary of Parents Anonymous.

Acting Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Walter Macaranas, Division of Youth Services administrator Vivian T. Sablan, staff of their respective offices, and parents from public and private schools witnessed the signing at the Governor’s Office conference room.

The National Parent Leadership Month began in 2004 and it aims to recognize parents that went beyond their families in helping improve the community. Parents Anonymous has an office here in the CNMI under DYS’ Parent Education Program.

Torres, who has five kids and another one on the way, said being a parent is a tough job especially for those who work. “That’s why I always see to it that I spend time with my kids. Weekends are my special time with them.”

He added that showing love and spending valuable time with your kids is free and would help them develop their personal skills. “The way you treat them will make a big different in their lives that will go a long way.”

Dandan Middle School parent leader Jacob Lizama said giving your children attention and time to talk to them is important for them to succeed. Macaranas added that the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow.

Macaranas said they lined up various programs for the month-long celebration starting with a Parent Education Program Display at the DCCA-Nutrition Assistance Program office in As Lito from Feb. 1 to 5, while an Early Childhood STEP Class is set at the Dandan Head Start starting on Feb. 10. The STEP Class is also scheduled on Feb. 16-17, 19, 23-24, and 26.

A Parent Education Program Presentation will be held in different schools on Feb. 9, 11, and 13, while organizers will be the guest speaker on the KKMP Radio Talk Show on Feb. 10. A Parent Education Program Display/Outreach is set on Feb. 11 at 6pm at the Pedro P Tenorio Multipurpose Center in Susupe.

On Feb. 16 and 17, a Parent Education Program Display/Outreach will be held at the CHCC-Women, Infant and Children Program, while a Parent Development Workshop is set on Feb. 20 from 7:30am to 4:30pm with the venue to be announced.
