A woman is appealing to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to overturn her conviction of immigration document fraud and subsequent jail sentence.

Defendant Rowena Agnes Urumelog, through counsel Mark B. Hanson, has notified the U.S. District Court for the NMI about her appeal seeking to reverse her conviction and sentence.

Hanson said they are also appealing court orders denying Urumelog’s pre-trial motions; order denying defendant’s motion for judgment of acquittal; rulings regarding jury instructions and verdict form; rulings on defendant’s objections to the presentence investigation report; and court’s application of the advisory sentencing guidelines.

Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona recently imposed a four-month jail term and four-month home detention on the defendant.

Manglona placed Urumelog on three years of supervised release and required her to, among other conditions, pay a $100 court assessment fee.

The judge granted defense attorney Mark Hanson’s request to allow the defendant at liberty until a jail facility is designated.

Last Dec. 7, a federal jury found the 42-year-old Urumelog guilty of immigration document fraud when she life in her petition for her second husband, a Bangladeshi national, that she has never filed a similar petition before.
