Raffy Piamonte earned his second club championship after ruling the 2015 FilTaga Golfer of the Year Tournament held last weekend at the Kingfisher Golf Links and Marianas Country Club.
Piamonte, who won his first FilTaga Golfer of the Year award in 2011, secured the 2015 crown after posting a net 69 in the second and final round of the season-ending tournament at MCC. The 20-handicapper had a gross 89 built around his 43 on the front nine and 46 on the back.
Earlier in the first round of play at Kingfisher, Piamonte, who qualified in the yearly tournament for topping the February contest, was tied for second with Norman Tenorio behind September Ace Nestor Siruelo. Piamonte, who listed a 21 handicap at Kingfisher, had a 46 and 47 for a gross 93 and net 72. Tenorio after deducting his 20 handicap in the opening round also tallied a net 72 and gross 92 (43 and 49). Siruelo, on the other hand, took the lead in Round 1 with his net 68. The 20-handicapper fired a 50 on the front nine, but managed to take a 4-shot lead against Tenorio and Piamonte after shooting a 38 in the last nine holes.
However, Piamonte grabbed the upper hand in the end after registering the second best net (behind Ernie Lopez’s 68) in the two-day tournament with his 69 and 141 total, while Tenorio settled for second place with his two-day tally of 143. Tenorio had a 71 in the second round after carding a 46 on the front and 44 on the back for a gross 90. He had a 19 handicap in the final round.
Eric Mandell, who recorded nets 74 and 70, rounded out the Top 3 with his 144. Siruelo faltered on his bid to win the 2015 club championship after scoring a net 79 in the second round. The Day 1 leader and 19 handicapper logged a 50 and 48 on the front and back nines, respectively.
With Piamonte prevailing in the weekend tournament, he duplicated Adony Matutito’s feat in the FilTaga Golfers Association. Matutino topped the 2010 and 2012 editions of the annual tournament. Larry Pascual ruled the inaugural event in 2009, while other winners were Manny Po (2013) and Freddie Cataluna (2014).
