CUC, NMTI to start devt program in Feb.
Training for new and current Commonwealth Utilities Corp. power generation staff is targeted to start on February.
“We agreed that our target will be right around February. I think Feb. 15 is the date that we want to implement the development program,” CUC acting executive director Gary Camacho told the board in a meeting yesterday.
Camacho said the power generation staff development program with the Northern Marianas Technical Institute is a CNMI Department of Labor-recognized course.
About 30 participants are expected to undergo the training.
Board vice chair Eric San Nicolas made clear if workers from the islands of Tinian and Rota are being included in the program, to which Camacho said yes.
Board chair Adelina Roberto also clarified how the participants are being selected.
“We have empowered the division manager because the expectation also is that he has communicated with the supervisors and there’s a consensus as to who it is. It’s not just one person who’s deciding. It’s the same with the resident directors,” Camacho replied.
However, a list for the participants isn’t finalized yet.
“[The participants] are to be determined and I want to get recommendations from the division managers because at the end of the day they will be responsible for that particular sections and not only that they are experts in that particular area. They need to communicate with their supervisors,” Camacho added in an interview.
Board member Diego Songao also stated that the training will be some kind of an investment and that it should be ensured that those who will be part of it will stay with the company for some years.
“We have to make sure that this investment is good for the next few years and not somebody who will just retire next year,” Songao said.
Camacho said there are criteria that they will follow in choosing the participants for the program.
He added that there will be other programs as well as they develop their workforce.
“This isn’t a one-course six-month program. There will be additional programs on top of this as we prepare to continue to develop our workforce,” Camacho said.
