Garapan to have limited water supply until pumps are replaced

Parts of Garapan that are being serviced by the water tank in Puerto Rico will continue to have limited water supply in the coming days.

Commonwealth Utilities Corp. water and wastewater department chief engineer John Riegel said they will continue to limit hours of service in the area.

“We’re going to have to start limiting some more hours in Garapan for a while,” Riegel said.

The Puerto Rico tank has been experiencing low water supply particularly last Saturday.

“The problem was that because we had less supply going in to the tank, we didn’t adjust our discharge from the tank and therefore we ran out of water in the tank,” Riegel said.

Riegel said some pumps supplying the Puerto Rico tank are still not working and that they need to be replaced.

“We got a few wells down so that hasn’t helped things in that area,” Riegel said.

He said five of the wells that serve the Puerto Rico reservoir currently have problems. The wells that serve the said tank are located in Obyan and Isley Field

Riegel said the engineers will figure out how many hours they can supply water with the amount that is coming in. They will then set a water supply schedule for the service area affected.

Just last November CUC was able to supply 24-hour water service to the whole Garapan area. However, it will now be back to limited service until the downed pumps get replaced.

He added that replacements these will be coming soon.

“They’re supposed to be coming at the end of the month,” Riegel said.

Associate engineer Larry Manacop said it will take several days for them to install the pumps.

“Once we receive that, it will take maybe a week to replace all the downed wells,” Manacop said.
