LibDay committees to plan early for 2016 festivities

Committees of the Liberation Day festivities are being called for an early meeting by the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

According to Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang they will hold a meeting on Jan. 14.

“That’s how early we’re going to start, unlike last year,” Apatang said, “We called Skywalker to set up a meeting. We will meet with Skywalker and the rest of the group.”

Apatang said they will discuss during the meeting if the committees want to reorganize.

“We will call those committees back and see if they want to reorganize or not. We’re going to check with the chairman if he wants to continue,” Apatang said.

Last year’s Liberation committee chairman was Chris Leon Guerrero.

One of the major talking points is if they will again do a monthlong celebration.

They will also look into bringing in carnival rides—a part of the plan during last year’s festivities but wasn’t able to push through because of late planning.

“Last year we were pushing for the rides but it was kind of late,” Apatang said. “I’m sure this year if we start early, we can see a lot of changes with this year’s Liberation festivities.”

He added that they don’t want to have issues again regards to the operation of the Thursday Market at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Apatang said they will also start early with the solicitations and fundraising for the floats and other activities.

Special assistant Henry Hofschneider added that any interested members of the public can also attend the meeting this week.
