KHS’s Staffler is teachers’ karaoke champ
Kagman High School principal Leila Staffler was a special guest at the KKMP radio station last Thursday where she was presented with her award and prize as the winner of the Teachers’ Karaoke Competition held last December.
Staffler sang Cece Peniston’s 1991 hit Finally live on radio.
KKMP and other organizers of this year’s Christmas in the Marianas presented certificates and cash prizes that day to those who weren’t able to attend the awarding ceremony last month.
Prior to being its principal, Staffler was a teacher at KHS since 2001. She also once placed second in a singing competition held at Tinian Dynasty and Casino.
Staffler said she used to sing in open mike bars with friends while studying at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.
“I did not have any neighbors where I live on the hills, so I sing like I’m in an opera. My only audience were the dogs and chickens,” Staffler said.
She said her biggest influence was her mom who enjoys singing karaoke.
“I wish I took formal music classes while in college or studied in a conservatory. Music is my passion,” she said.
Staffler is already anticipating next year’s Teacher’s Karaoke competition, not because she will be joining again but because she gets to sit as one of its judges.
“Next year I will be judging the contest since the champion will sit as one of the judges according to the rules. I will get to see who steps up next year. Expect to see awesome talent,” Staffler said.
