The free health screening at the San Antonio Parish Social Hall on Dec. 6, 2015, drew almost 70 members of the Saipan community.
Organized and hosted by the U.S. Pinoys for Good Governance Marianas chapter and the National Federation of Filipino-American Associations Marianas chapter, in collaboration with El Shaddai Saipan chapter, the health screening featured blood sugar and blood pressure checks, physicals, and distribution of free brochures on the prevention of diseases.
According to Dr. Celia Lamkin, chairperson of USP4GG and NaFFAA Marianas chapter for CNMI and Guam, those who availed of the health screening were not just Filipinos but also Chamorros, Carolinians, Chinese, and other nationalities.
Volunteer Valerie Jean Lacsina, who is a nurse coordinator for Marianas Medical Center, said, “The free health screening was very organized and successful. I encourage others to volunteer and help our community.”
Another volunteer, Maribeth Gavan, who is a medical and billing encoder at Marianas Medical Center, said: “It is indeed a good feeling to volunteer and you know that you are helping other people, especially those who have no health insurance so their health parameters can be checked. I hope that this free health screening can be provided to the community on a regular basis.”
The weight, height, and body mass index measurements were performed by Ronald Lamkin, a USP4GG Marianas chapter volunteer. Lamkin advised those with high BMI to modify their lifestyle and lose weight.
“I am glad that there are more members of the community who availed of the free health screening. This means that more people are getting health conscious and are more concerned about their health,” he said.
Dr. Lamkin discussed lifestyle changes and healthy habits to those with abnormal levels of blood sugar and high blood pressure. They were also advised to consult their doctors and some were referred to medical clinics and the hospital.
Other volunteers from Marianas Medical Center were Mary Deala and Honey Ebuen. USPGG Marianas chapter members and volunteers who helped in the health screening were Jasminda Guiao, Johnny Gacayan, Chanda Olita, Jovy Brondo, and Edgar Gacayan. (PR)
