“Elves” began packing toys yesterday morning for Karidat’s annual toy drive as community partner donations have been pouring in with Christmas only three days away.
McDonald’s owner Joe Ayuyu donated $1,000 to the toy drive to benefit families in need and to lift the spirit of those who continue to experience the after effects of Typhoon Soudelor.
Karidat executive director Lauri Ogumoro said that about 50 families comprising over 200 children and occupants at the women’s shelter will be the recipients of the toys.
“The community has been very generous with helping us out. We were a little worried at the beginning that we weren’t going to get enough toys but all of a sudden there’s an avalanche of toys,” she said.
Today, Tuesday, will be the cutoff date for donations.
“We’re very thankful to McDonald’s and all the people who have supported us throughout the year and especially through Typhoon Soudelor. It’s going to be a very important Christmas for everyone,” Ogumoro said.
Many families lost so much this year and the toy drive serves to bring them some holiday cheer, she added.
Ayuyu said he is happy that Karidat continues to be of great help to the community despite its many challenges.
“You know, if there’s anybody that really needs help, it’s [Karidat]. I’m always happy to at least help [them] in a small way…” he said.
