The NMI Scholarship Office denied more applications than approved them for the spring 2012 semester due to unmet requirements and other factors.

Administrator Jackie Che disclosed Tuesday that the agency approved a total of 533 applications for the spring semester while rejecting 593 others due to a host of factors.

Of the approved applications, 248 were from off-island and 285 were from the Northern Marianas College.

A total of 264 applications from off-island were denied due to missing records, late document submission, or failure to meet requirements such as the cumulative GPA, AA/BA award duration, exceeded non-degree unit, part or quarter-time status, and non-U.S. citizens.

Some 329 applications of NMC students were denied as they are not enrolled or have withdrawn their enrollment, have pending FAFSA submission, no financial need based on NMC’s determination, and failure to meet some other program requirements.

According to Che, some fall 2011 applications carried over to the spring 2012 semester. Technically, that meant students did not need to re-apply for the spring 2012 semester if they’ve already submitted a fall 2011 application. Che said the fall 2011 applications were deemed good for one school year.

For the new school year, an applicant must turn in an application for the fall 2012 semester to be considered for that semester and another application to be considered for the spring 2012 semester.

Che said the board did not make any changes in the financial awards for recipients for the spring 2012 semester.

The NMI Scholarship Office has a budget of $2 million this fiscal year, of which $1.1 million will go to NMC scholars-both Honors and EAP-while the remaining balance will pay for the financial assistance of off-island scholars.

Che said $810,000 has been set aside for off-island recipients for the entire fiscal year 2012.
