CUC: As Terlaje road needs extensive repair
As Terlaje lane closures have slowed motorists traveling through the area. The lane closures are due to work done on CUC’s 16 in. water main. At this time, the Department of Public Works along with CUC are working with a contractor to begin proper repairs to the lanes. (Daisy Demapan)
The Department of Public Works and Commonwealth Utilities Corp. are currently working through the request-for-proposals process to begin repair work on the road lanes.
According to CUC information officer Brad Ruszala, the water issue was repaired within 24 hours but the road has yet to be repaired as CUC goes through the procurement process.
As of last week, the total damage to the site was determined, with the assessment of Department of Public Works for complete specifications needed for contractors to perform the road repairs, Ruszala said.
The repair is estimated to cost over $160,000, he said.
Ruszala said the 16-inch water main experienced increased water pressure in combination with the gravity flow system coming from their Kannat Tabla tank and the downward motion of the As Terlaje slope.
“As water builds up pressure, along with gravity and the downhill motion, it creates more pressure [within the main],” he said. Although CUC uses pressure reducing valves, whenever you have a slope, the water’s PSI can more than triple, he said.
Currently, CUC is working on reinforcing, repairing and prioritizing its main tanks to relieve areas that experience intense pressure.
For the drivers traversing the area, take precautionary measures such as reducing uphill and downhill speeds through all lanes until repairs are made.
