Share

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona handed down today a 12.7-year sentence against former Commonwealth Health Center employee Melvin Garong Ada for stealing from CHC over $1.7 million intended as payment for a medical supplier company.

Manglona ordered Ada to pay $5,300 in court assessment fee immediately.

A separate hearing will be conducted to determine the amount of restitution Ada must pay.

After completing the prison term, Ada will be placed on three years of supervised release. He will be required to perform 500 hours of community service.

In October 2013, Ada pleaded guilty to 56 charges for misappropriating and diverting CNMI Treasury checks made payable to a medical supplier company totaling over $1.7 million.

Last June 26, a federal jury acquitted Melvin Ada’s wife, Leyda Ada, of the charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and money laundering. The jury, however, found her guilty of perjury. She has yet to be sentenced.

More details to follow.
