Cuki to hold open grappling tournament

Trench Tech promoter Cuki Alvarez is inviting all interested individuals and other mixed martial arts gyms to join an open house grappling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 10am to 4pm at the Trench Tech Gym in Garapan.

Those who are interested in joining must get in touch with Alvarez to give them their name and weight class. There is no entry fee required and spectators can also watch all grappling matches for free.

Alvarez said he would make the brackets once the list of all competitors is completed. Cash prizes will be given away instead of medals to the winners of each weight division.

Fight fans will be again treated to witness the origin of mixed martial arts as fighters are expected to show the highly technical side of grappling and submission fighting.

In July this year, Alvarez held the Art of War IX: Grappling, Submission and Jiu jitsu Challenge at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai where his nephew, Roman “Sonic” Boom” Alvarez, went home with three gold meals in three weight divisions.

Alvarez ruled the open weight gi event to highlight his three-gold medal haul. He went undefeated in the tournament where he also topped the lightweight and welterweight divisions.

The Trench Tech fighter defeated stablemate and former wrestler Adam Harris in a winner-take-all match for the gold in the open weight gi division aside from beating cousin Shane “Pikaboo” Alvarez and Jasper Van Der Maas in the welterweight and lightweight categories.

In other news, bemedalled Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Mike Fowler canceled his planned trip to Saipan because of work-related issues.

Cuki Alvarez said he just found out of the news on Thursday morning. Fowler was due to arrive on Saipan at 1pm Thursday where he was going to give a weeklong seminar and training in submission grappling.

Alvarez apologized to all those who are expecting to learn more about grappling and jiu-jitsu from the former high school wrestler Fowler, who holds a black belt in BJJ.

Fowler, a many-time medalist in the Asian Open Championship, was originally set to arrive in September but with Saipan still without power, water, and recovering from the lashing of Typhoon Soudelor, his trip was postponed.
