Salvation Army serves over 600 during Thanksgiving

The Salvation Army’s annual Thanksgiving lunch at their soup kitchen served double the amount of people than previous years, according to ministry leader Pastor Wayne Gillespie.

The Salvation Army also provided food deliveries to a number of families who were identified by the Commonwealth Advocates for Recovery Efforts as severely affected by Typhoon Soudelor.

“[Up] to 250 meals were delivered to people affected by the typhoon and over 300 people ate at the soup kitchen,” he said.

In the aftermath of Soudelor, the organization was able to serve over 36,000 meals in August alone.

Gillespie shared that there are still many things to be done and avenues for volunteering this year including the annual Red Kettle season that is taking place everyday except Sundays at select outlets. For anyone interested, the shifts are only two hours long and are a great way to spread holiday cheer, he said.

The annual toy drive is still ongoing with books, board games, toys, CDs, and basketballs being acceptable gifts, all of which will be donated to the children under the Division of Youth Services.
