Over 20 participate in community gardens training
Over 20 participants attended the first day of training for the community gardens project of the Let’s Move Marianas alliance and the Division of Public Health.
Victor Cabrera, a teacher at Hopwood Junior High School and a hobbyist, taught participants Gardening 101 as well as different types of gardening.
Various organizations such as the Youth Empowerment Alliance For Health and the departments such as the Office of the Lieutenant Governor attended the training held at Kanoa Resort last Saturday.
According to Let’s Move Marianas chairperson and DPH-NCD Bureau’s diabetes project assistant Amber Mendiola, participants had the opportunity to learn about the different types of gardening that are available on island and the ones that they are actually going to do.
“Everybody learned about the different types of gardening that we’re going to be conducting and then we discussed the sites that we’re going to do the gardening,” Mendiola said.
Tomorrow, the participants will have another training session and will be touring the sites where the community gardens will be established.
The locations for the gardens are Koblerville Youth Center, San Antonio Youth Center, Gualo Rai Youth Center, Kagman Community Health Center, and the Governor’s Office on Capital Hill.
A garden will also be established at the lot of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. for DPH.
Mendiola said they plan to start planting in the community gardens in December.
Organizations will be adopting plots from each of the sites where they will be able to plant and grow their own cucumber, lettuce, potatoes, mulberry bushes, atis, pumpkin, and watermelons, among others.
