Marquez wins Club 88’s mural design competition

An amateur artist who used to be with the Merchant Marine has been named the winner of Club 88’s mural design competition and his winning artwork will soon be on display when he paints it on a wall of the Mariana Resort & Spa, where Club 88 recently opened a second e-gaming facility.
Chrisnoen Marquez of Gualo Rai was awarded $1,500 by club owner Victoria Scott and manager Michael Holl last Wednesday for winning the competition.
In keeping with the competition’s island theme, Marquez created a design of an ocean filled with creatures such as several fish and a dolphin, as well as tropical plants and flowers.
“This is definitely one of the cleanest, most professional ones out of the entries that we had. It fit the theme of the competition. It’s a great design, good artist,” Holl said.
Aside from the natural ocean elements, Marquez also added ships, much like the view from Beach Road.
“I added ships because on Beach Road you see them and it’s a beautiful sight—the sunset and the ships are there and because I’m basically a retired merchant marine myself,” he said.
Marquez, who was encouraged by his wife to join the competition, isn’t a professional painter or artist but has been doing a lot of drawings since his youth.
“When I was on the ship, I did a lot of tattoo drawings, stuff like that. Ever since I was young I did a lot of drawings,” Marquez said.
It will be his first time to paint a mural. Marquez said he looks forward to start painting and will do it as soon as the materials are available.
Marquez will be painting on the exterior wall of the veranda overlooking Mandi Asian Spa and the Pacific Ocean. The wall measures about 25 feet long and 20 feet tall.
“This will be a great experience for me to do something like this. I’m really going to do my best. I want to inspire my kids too,” he said.
