The Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture is hoping to send a delegation of local artists to the 25th Guam Micronesia Island Fair this year.
Organized by the Guam Visitors Bureau, the Guam Micronesia Island Fair is the island’s annual signature cultural event showcasing the vibrant cultures of Micronesia.
This year’s festivities will be held at the Ypao Beach in Tumon from Oct. 5 to 7.
Arts in Program coordinator Parker Y. Yobei said yesterday that they are looking at sending a maximum of 10 traditional artists from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, and one traditional Chamorro or Carolinian performing group composed of 10 members from Saipan.
“We’re trying to invite local artists as early as now so we’ll know who’s interested and we can solicit from private companies for assistance in sending them to Guam in October to represent the CNMI,” he told Saipan Tribune.
Parker said the council’s ability to have these artists flown to the southern neighboring island will depend on the outcome of its solicitations and sponsorship letters, which were sent out beginning last week.
He noted that the solicitations will only have to be for the airfares since GVB takes care of the delegates’ lodging, ground transportation, and meals.
He emphasized that only registered traditional artists will be given a chance to go. Other artists interested to join the group will have to pay for their own trip.
