Public warned of hazardous surf until Monday
Fresh to occasionally strong trade winds and combined seas of 8 to 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft, according to the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, citing information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam.
A high surf advisory remains in effect for north and east facing reefs until Monday noon.
Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet along north facing reefs and 9 to 12 feet along east facing reefs could build to much higher levels this weekend. Surf will remain hazardous until Monday.
A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6pm Sunday. Winds of 20 knots and combined seas of 10 feet or higher will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft. Seas exceeding 10 feet will mainly be east of the islands.
The public is being advised to avoid venturing into the water along exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north and east, as rip currents will be life threatening. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should also avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. (EOC)
