MJD went to business midway in the third canto after a so-so performance in the first half en route to a 19-point winning margin.
Ahead by only a deuce, 48-46, MJD outgunned Triple J in the last five minutes of the third period, 19-6, to turn a 43-37 halftime advantage to a 67-52 spread, going into the final canto. Freddie Pelisamen led the breakaway as he reported back for the match after sitting out at the start of the second half and knocked in 7 straight points and 9 in the third. J.R. Del Castillo also came off the bench and contributed 6 markers in the pivotal quarter to give MJD a 15-point lead.
MJD was never threatened from thereon, as the closest that Triple J could get was within 9 points, 60-69 after Perry Inos scored 6 of the losing team’s first 8 points in the fourth frame. An 8-0 run by MJD off Cecilio Bisana’s short jumper and back-to-back triples from Pelisamen and Melvin Deocares ended Triple J’s chances for a comeback.
Pelisamen went on to top-score for MJD with his 23, while Del Castillo, Deocares, and Jerome Directo chipped in 10 apiece. Rey Pestillos paced Triple J with his 21 markers, while Inos added 14.
Meanwhile, in other open division results, Blue Haus routed Armatech, 74-55, while Pacific Islands Club won via forfeit against Ferrera Builders.
Blue Haus earned the double-digit winning margin as it gained momentum in the second half after Armatech gave the former a good fight in the first 20 minutes of play.
Blue Haus was just up by a hair at the end of the first half, 28-27, when Manalo Manalo recorded 8 of his squad’s first 10 points in the third canto to create more space between them and Armatech. Marlon De Dios and Brendon Talania picked up where Manalo started in the third frame, combining for Blue Haus’ last 10 points and lifting their team to a 50-41 lead, entering the fourth quarter.
In the final period, other Blue Haus players stepped up to keep the squad’s safe distance.
