DLNR to have another meeting on Outer Cove Marina

The Department of Lands and Natural Resources will be meeting with tenants and other concerned members of the public regarding the use of the Outer Cove Marina. The meeting will be held tomorrow evening at the DLNR-DFW Smiling Cove parking lot.

According to DLNR Secretary Richard Seman, the Outer Cove will no longer be used for loading and unloading; however, it could still be used for the parking the boats.

“If they want to stay there just for parking their boats, that is fine with DLNR provided that they sign a waiver that they fully understand the conditions and…the circumstances that may occur and that they are fully responsible for what is going to happen to them if it happens,” Seman said.

He added that every staff of the companies or operators that may use the marina must sign the waiver.

Seman said they continue to look at the Smiling Cove Marina as a possible area where operators can load and unload passengers. He said they will discuss this again at the next meeting.

Earlier in the first meeting, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, which operates the Smiling Cove, said they needed information including the schedule of those who want to use the marina, which was originally intended for recreational boaters and not for commercial use.

Seman said a $1 nominal fee might be required for each passenger who will use the Smiling Cove for maintenance.

He also added that not all boats may be able to use the Smiling Cove, especially the larger vessels that require deeper drafts.

Seman said they are looking at seeking the help of the Commonwealth Ports Authority as well as utilizing the south seaplane ramp as alternatives.
