A 22-year-old man who was arrested and charged for going on a rampage in Dandan after his mother gave him only $5 instead of the $20 that he was asking for pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace and was slapped with a 10-day prison term.

J.T. Juan Rios Taitano pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal. He was represented by assistant public defender Tillman Clark.

Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio sentenced Taitano to 30 days in prison, all suspended except for 10 days, with credit for 12 days of time served. That means Taitano immediately goes free.

Taitano was placed on probation for one year, required to perform 50 hours of community service, and ordered to attend any recommended counseling at the Community Guidance Center.

Taitano is prohibited from harassing or assaulting his mother and from possessing or consuming any controlled substance during his probation.

As part of the plea deal, the remaining criminal mischief charge was dropped.

The mother had sought police’s help when Taitano started screaming and breaking items at their house on June 5, 2015, on Saipan. Taitano was upset at his mother for not giving him money so he yelled and screamed at her.

The mother believed that her son was under the influence of methamphetamine or “ice” at the time.

Police detective Daniel T. Kintol stated in his report that earlier that day, the mother asked Taitano to clear the overgrown vegetation outside their residence. Taitano was doing fine until a vehicle arrived at the house. Taitano approached the vehicle and then went to his mother to ask for $20. The mother gave him only $5.

Taitano got mad and yelled at his mother. He told his mother to keep the money, entered the house and began throwing and damaging items.

The mother said that Taitano’s behavior changed dramatically since he started hanging out with drug users.
