DFEMS donates $9K to cancer association

The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services donated yesterday $9,517 to the Commonwealth Cancer Association from funds gathered during community events held in support of cancer awareness activities last month.

DFEMS Commissioner Clyde K. Norita presented the check to government officials and cancer association officials at the Office of the Governor’s conference room yesterday. Accompanying Norita were first responders and emergency management officials.

Norita told Saipan Tribune that the donations were combined from boot drives held every Wednesday last month, a “Pink Warrior” walkathon held on Oct. 24, and cancer awareness T-shirts that were sold in October. Norita said total T-shirt sales amounted to around $1,200.

“It’s great. It’s a community effort,” Norita said in an interview after the check presentation. “[It was our] first time to try the boot drive program, which is basically our firefighters standing on the side of the road with their boot and people putting money in. It’s a great event” and they earned “positive feedback from the community.”

Last month was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
