GES receives tents, school supplies from BSI

The onslaught of typhoon winds and torrential rains that whipped our islands into a state of widespread destruction did not exempt anyone and anything. The schools were invalidated by the state of ruin, prompting the school district to postpone the start of the school year.

Garapan Elementary School had to hold double sessions of half-day classes until power and water was restored. Classrooms were leaking in water from damaged roofs, and most of the walkways and hallways were blown off or damaged. But one by one, little by little, the island of Saipan is able to catch up and move forward toward recovery and continued attempts at normalcy.

While the school district continues its rebuilding efforts, Garapan Elementary School yesterday received tents, along with needed school supplies, from Best Sunshine International Ltd. to help protect students from the elements on the walkways. GES lost its walkways from Typhoon Soudelor. Best Sunshine International Ltd. partnered twice with GES’ active 80-member My Wave Club in the company’s beach clean up and beautification projects following the typhoon and ongoing recovery phase. Seeing the students’ own need for shelter and protection under scorching or raining weather, and because of the damaged walkways and waiting areas, Best Sunshine donated two tents along with much-needed school supplies to the school.

GES principal Liela Yumul says, “Garapan Elementary School is really happy to receive this donation of tents. It will truly help us with our community events, but most importantly, help us with protection from the elements on the walkways, from the cafeteria to the main building when it rains, ever since the hallways got damaged from the storm. These tents are a great contribution to our school and for our kids.”

“On behalf of all the My Wave kids and the rest of the GES family, we would like to give acknowledgment and our sincere thanks to the supportive gestures shown by Best Sunshine in helping those in need.  We look forward to collaborating with them in their future clean up projects and community events,” added GES My Wave coordinator, Evelyn Alarcon.
