Tourist who reportedly jumped from hotel already buried
$12K watch, other belongings returned to mother
Wan-xu Jiang, a 30-year-old Chinese man who died after reportedly jumping from his hotel room, was already buried and his belongings were returned to his mother, Saipan Tribune learned yesterday.
Businessman Ta Bun Kuy said Jiang’s body was buried at the Tanapag Cemetery last Wednesday morning and in the afternoon on that same day, police investigators returned Jiang’s belongings to his mother, Lian Ping Yu.
Ta assisted Yu in preparing Jiang’s burial.
Saipan Tribune learned from sources that only a shirt and a few items, and less than $50 were found in Jiang’s hotel room.
Citing bank records in China that showed Jiang withdrew $50,000 a few days before coming to Saipan, Yu believes that her son still had a large amount of cash in his possession when he died.
Sources said Jiang checked in at Grandvrio Resort a day before he was found dead. Sources said Jiang was scheduled to check out on that day.
It was not clear where he stayed on Saipan prior to the day of his death considering that he arrived alone on the island last May 22. It was not clear where he put his other belongings.
Sources also disclosed that police recovered Jiang’s watch worth $12,000 from a Chinese woman who works at a massage parlor in Garapan. Police found out about the watch upon seeing a receipt of the item.
The woman handed the watch to police, who in turn gave it to Jiang’s mother, sources said.
Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason Tarkong said yesterday he would check about the matter.
Yu, a 59-year-old engineer, has disagreed with the police’s findings that her son killed himself by jumping from his hotel room on the 18th floor of Grandvrio Resort in Garapan. She believes that her son may have accidentally fallen from the balcony of his room.
Yu stated that her son died last June 12, but that the Chinese Embassy in Los Angeles only informed her about his death last Sept. 18.
Yu arrived on Saipan last Oct. 6 accompanied by Jiang’s godfather, Wen Dong Li, 62, also an engineer. The two already returned to Dalian Province. It was their first time to visit Saipan.
Yu said her son joined the Chinese army but was discharged after sustaining some injuries during an exercise. She said her son then worked as a computer IT.
