Stray dog complaints reach Mayor’s Office
Spay and neuter program on hold
The Saipan Mayor’s Office has been receiving complaints about stray dogs on the island.
“There are a lot of complaints about stray dogs,” Mayor David M. Apatang said, “We get calls about dogs chasing kids.”
He added that they also got a complaint about a dog destroying couches and clothes.
Apatang added that they have been actively picking up stray dogs randomly in villages since this month. However, the dog shelter is still in dire need of repair.
The roof of the dog shelter has fallen in and cages were covered with tarps to keep the dogs dry. About 30 dogs are currently in the shelter.
The Saipan Mayor’s Office estimates that between $200,000 and $350,000 is needed to repair the dog shelter that was badly devastated by Typhoon Soudelor.
They have requested assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the funding but repair work is still yet to be done.
With the shelter damaged, the spay and neuter program that was supposed to be this month is on hold.
Apatang said the program could be pushed to next year, depending on how soon we can get the funding.
“We have to get things in order first,” Apatang said, “There’s no roof. We have to fix it.”
Last May, a 10-day program was held by the Mayor’s Office, Humane Society International, and Animal Balance at the shelter in Lower Base and in Kagman where over 300 dogs were spayed and neutered.
