30TH INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP
Sign up for global coastal cleanup on Nov. 14
It is not too late to sign up for 30th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, which will be held this year on Nov. 14, 2015, a Saturday. Get your friends, family, coworkers, club members, and anyone else to take an hour out of their Saturday and pick up trash. Join in CNMI’s and the world’s fight to keep our seas trash free.
Worldwide the top 10 common things that are found along the shore are cigarettes, food wrappers, plastic bottles, plastic bags, bottle caps, plastic eating utensils, straws, glass bottles, aluminum cans, and paper bags. Saipan is no different. Last year Saipan picked up almost 4,035 cigarette butts, 1,899 food wrappers, 1,412 plastic bottle caps, and other items that equaled 17,765 lbs of trash. There is no denying that trash is an issue along our coasts.
Trash not only becomes an eyesore on the beaches that residents and tourist enjoy, but it can also cause health issues from water pollution and dangers from stepping on trash (e.g., glass). Our wildlife is also in danger from the debris we find along our coast. They get entangled, ingest it, and in some cases it is the cause of their mortality.
Join this global and local effort! Put your community first and sign up for the International Coastal Cleanup on your island. Call your local coordinator and see what beaches are available for cleanup. An hour of work will remove debris dangers from our coast and protect us and the local wildlife.
