Library to reopen after Soudelor damage
Saipan’s state library, the Joeten Kiyu Public Library, has been closed to the public since Typhoon Soudelor hit the island in August.
After almost three months, the library in Susupe will reopen for the first time next Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to acting library director Erlinda Naputi.
Naputi said the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. was able to reenergize the library last Oct. 11.
Despite this, JKPL will operate with limited services and hours.
Naputi said the library will be open on Tuesdays through Fridays from 1pm to 6pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm.
She added that JKPL’s total damage is still being assessed. Among the library’s exterior and interior damage are its torn roof, resulting in major leaks; some books also got ruined. Molds were also a problem.
“Damage is still being assessed. Besides structural damage, some of our computers, monitors, and backup batteries are no longer able to function,” Naputi said.
Penalties for those who weren’t able to return overdue books in July and August will be waived. Fines will also be waived for library materials that were due in July and August.
“Patrons with library materials that are currently checked out are advised to return them,” Naputi added.
