In the U18 pairing last Tuesday at the San Antonio court, Judith’s Warriors crushed Ferrera Builders, 95-75, while in the open division match last Sunday, GMI Market pulled off a come-from-behind win against Ferrera, 89-82.
GMI Market prevailed in the battle of debuting teams after overhauling an 8-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Jesse Paul Doseo led GMI’s Market recovery, as he knocked in 14 of his 18 points in the final canto with his last basket in the game giving his team its first taste of the lead since the second canto, 82-81, going into the final one and a half minutes of the match.
Three straight points from burly forward Michael Babauta made it an 85-81 advantage for GMI Market before a split from Rolly Paraiso brought Ferrera within 3, 82-85. Paraiso muffed his second charity, but Ferrera got the offensive rebound for a chance to move closer with a quick 2. However, J.R. Mina opted for a triple and hit an airball. This time GMI Market controlled the rebound with Jesse Santos on the finishing end, making a fastbreak layup against the former to up their lead to two possessions, 87-82, down to 30.1 seconds.
Another missed triple from Ferrera returned the leather to GMI Market and Donnel Isip sealed the win for the latter with his layup, just less than 10 seconds remaining in the match.
Meanwhile, in the U18 division, Judith’s Warriors bounced back from their debut loss to GMI Market (77-86) following their 20-point winning margin against the then unbeaten Ferrera.
Judith’s Warriors began establishing a double-digit lead in the third period en route to handing Ferrera its first loss in three games. Mike Arciaga anchored the breakaway, dropping 13 of his game-high 30 points in the pivotal third to turn Judith’s Warriors’ 48-41 halftime advantage to a 76-60 spread, entering the final canto.
It was cruise control for Judith’s Warriors from thereon with Arciaga’s teammates stepping up in the fourth frame to keep their big lead.
