AT 200 AM CHST…THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM CHAMPI (25W) WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 16.0N…LONGITUDE 148.8E. THIS WAS ABOUT 325 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF GUAM AND 215 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF SAIPAN. STORM MOTION WAS WEST. STORM INTENSITY WAS 60 MPH.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF THE CNMI. TROPICAL STORM CHAMPI CONTINUES TO MOVE TOWARD THE CNMI WITH THE CENTER EXPECTED TO PASS BETWEEN ANATAHAN AND ALAMAGAN THIS AFTERNOON.
DAMAGING WINDS AND HAZARDOUS WAVES AND SURF ARE EXPECTED ACROSS A LARGE PORTION OF THE CNMI STARTING AROUND SUNRISE THIS MORNING.

AS TROPICAL STORM CHAMPI (25W) APPROACHES…SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN AROUND SUNRISE THIS MORNING BEGINNING ON ALAMAGAN AND THEN EXTENDING NORTH TO PAGAN AND AGRIHAN. RIGHT NOW…THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED ON ALAMAGAN AND PAGAN…BUT A NORTHWARD SHIFT IN THE STORM TRACK WOULD BRING STRONGER WINDS TO AGRIHAN.
MAXIMUM WINDS ARE FORECAST TO BE IN THE 45 TO 60 MPH RANGE WITH GUSTS TO 75 MPH. LOOSE ITEMS WILL BECOME AIRBORNE…CAUSING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE INJURY. MANY LARGE BRANCHES OF TREES WILL BE SNAPPED…AND A FEW TREES WILL BE UPROOTED.
SEAS OF 8 TO 10 FEET THIS MORNING WILL BUILD TO BETWEEN 10 AND 12 FEET BY NOON TODAY. SEAS WILL THEN BUILD FURTHER TO BETWEEN 16 AND 20 FEET THIS AFTERNOON…DEPENDING UPON THE EXACT DISTANCE TO THE CENTER DURING ITS CLOSEST POINT OF APPROACH. SEAS WILL THEN DIMINISH TO BETWEEN 13 AND 17 FEET TONIGHT THEN CONTINUE DIMINISHING SATURDAY.
THE HIGHEST SURF OF 8 TO 10 FEET WILL BE ALONG NORTHEAST FACING REEFS EARLY THIS MORNING. THE HIGHEST SURF WILL SHIFT TO EAST…THEN SOUTH FACING REEFS AS IT BUILDS TO BETWEEN 17 AND 21 FEET TODAY AND TONIGHT. SURF WILL THEN DIMINISH TO BETWEEN 8 AND 11 FEET SATURDAY.
STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE… INUNDATION OF 2 TO 3 FEET WILL BE POSSIBLE…ESPECIALLY NEAR THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE…AROUND 10 AM THIS MORNING AND 9 PM THIS EVENING.
