Probable cause found to charge man who locked two sons inside vehicle
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio found probable cause yesterday to warrant the filing of charges against Frank Ichiro Sablan, who allegedly left his two sons inside a car without food, water, and air-conditioning for several hours so he could play poker.
At the preliminary hearing, Kim-Tenorio found probable cause to charge the 32-year-old Sablan with two counts of child neglect and two counts of disturbing the peace. Sablan was directed to answer the charges. Arraignment is on Monday at 9am.
Kim-Tenorio, however, did not find probable cause to charge Sablan for failing to pick up his other son from school and dismissed the two charges.
At the hearing, assistant attorney general Barbara Cepeda called to the witness stand police detective Myron Laniyo, who told the court about their investigation that led to Sablan’s arrest.
Assistant public defender Michael Sato served as counsel for Sablan.
Police said that Sablan locked the doors of his car, cracked the windows open, and left his two sons, ages 7 and 3 years old, inside the vehicle for several hours while playing poker in Oleai in the afternoon last Oct. 6.
Sablan also allegedly failed to pick up his 9-year-old son from school, prompting the child to walk from his school toward his mother’s work. Sablan did remember that he still needed to pick up the child from school but came upon him near the San Vicente intersection already.
