Public warned of hazardous surf today
Increasing swell and waves from a tropical disturbance east of the Marianas will cause surf to rise to hazardous levels across the Marianas, according to the CNMI Emergency Operations Center.
A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6pm Wednesday.
Surf was projected to rise to hazardous levels on east and north facing reefs of Saipan and Tinian last night and early this morning on Rota. Surf heights will peak on east facing reefs of Saipan and Tinian between 11 and 14 feet late Tuesday morning while Rota can expect hazardous surf of up to 12 feet by Tuesday afternoon. The hazardous surf threat will shift to the south and west facing reefs of the Marianas late Tuesday afternoon as the system moves west of the islands.
A small craft advisory is in effect until 6pm today, Tuesday.
A tropical disturbance will cause winds and seas to become hazardous to small craft. Expect winds of 20 to 25 knots with higher gusts in heavier showers while seas will rise to between 11 and 14 feet Tuesday. Seas will be higher across Saipan and Tinian waters. Winds and seas will begin to subside early Tuesday afternoon and could fall below advisory levels late Tuesday afternoon.
Mariners and the general public, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, avoid sailing near reef lines and shoaling areas. Exercise caution when entering or leaving harbors and inlets, as breaking waves can easily capsize your boat. Also, avoid venturing into the water along exposed reefs and beaches especially those facing north as rip currents will be life threatening. (EOC)
