Saipan Mayor’s Office seeks FEMA help for dog shelter, other facilities
The Saipan Mayor’s Office is in the process of applying for public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said they are now waiting for FEMA to assess some of their facilities, including the dog shelter in Lower Base, the nursery at Chalan Kanoa, and the Sugar King Park.
“We turned in our request for assistance,” he said. “I hope they can check us out so we can get some funding so we can repair, especially the facilities in the dog kennel area.”
The Mayor’s Office estimates that between $200,000 and 350,000 is needed to repair the dog shelter, which was badly devastated by Typhoon Soudelor. No estimate was given for the two other sites.
“We’re still waiting for the quotation for the Chalan Kanoa facility and the Sugar King Park,” Apatang said.
The Sugar King Park also sustained damage as many trees fell, bringing with them some parts of the fence.
“I think we spent about a week there just cleaning up the place,” Apatang said.
According to Apatang, if they fail to obtain FEMA funds for the dog shelter, they will look at other options. “I think there are federal grants on dogs, animal control.”
