Star Marianas launches Rota-Guam flights

Star Marianas Air announced Friday the commencement of twice daily scheduled flights between Rota and Guam starting Oct. 16, according to a statement from airline president Shaun Christian.

“With the recent opening of the Light Aircraft Commuter Facility [in] Guam, we now have a facility that is adequate for our size of aircraft and the scope of our operation,” the Star Marianas statement said.

Star Marianas says the Light Aircraft Commuter Facility is located west of the Guam International Airport terminal. It is in the building formerly known as the Yellow Cargo Building.

Flights will use twin engine Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftains, which feature air-conditioning and upgraded GPS navigation systems, according to Star Marianas.

Last April, Saipan Tribune reported that the Guam International Airport Authority would give the notice-to-proceed on renovations to the yellow cargo facility.

The Light Aircraft Commuter Facility is for light aircraft of 12,500 lbs or less and is exempt from Transportation Security Administration security mandates such as passenger screening, according to GIAA in April.

In its statement Friday, Star Marianas thanked the various parties who played an instrumental role in making their new service possible.

Star Marianas thanks the legislative delegations of Rota and Tinian, Rota Mayor Efraim Atalig, Tinian Mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas, the GIAA, the Commonwealth Ports Authority, CNMI and Guam customs, and quarantine agencies.
