Tropical disturbance has potential to affect NMI
The CNMI Emergency Operations Center, in coordination with the National Weather Service and Joint Typhoon Warning Center, is closely monitoring a tropical disturbance that has the potential to affect the CNMI over the next few days.
A tropical disturbance is centered about 900 miles east of Guam. This disturbance will move slowly west-northwest toward the Marianas over the next few days. As the system approaches the Marianas, expect scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop over the area by Tuesday and continue through at least Wednesday.
Periods of locally heavy showers, dangerous lightning and wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph are possible during the passage of this disturbance. Rainfall amounts of four inches or more are also possible, which can cause flooding in poor drainage and low-lying areas. Rough seas and low visibilities are also expected during the passage of this disturbance. Higher winds and rainfall are possible if the tropical disturbance develops faster than forecast.
The CNMI EOC will continue to monitor all conditions in our area and provide updates. Although this tropical disturbance is no threat to the CNMI at this time, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed for the latest statements and forecasts from the NWS, JTWC, and CNMI EOC. Keep alert for any statements from local officials or call the CNMI EOC at (670) 237-8000 or on HF single side band radio at frequency 5.205.0. (HSEM)
