Renovation work at Tinian airport terminals kicks off
Construction work is ongoing to improve the departure and arrival terminals at the Tinian International Airport.
Commonwealth Ports Authority executive assistant Wendi Prater, who is spearheading the project under CPA executive director Maryann Lizama, said the contractor began work on their site office and staging area on Aug. 24, 2015, which was an extension they received from CPA due to damage to their office brought by Typhoon Soudelor.
“They began actual work on the airport terminal last Sept. 28 and construction is now ongoing,” Prater told Saipan Tribune.
Lizama said the groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 17 on Tinian—after four years of project delays and an initial groundbreaking for the terminal’s improvements.
The project includes construction of a new restroom at the departure terminal and replacement of the high roof and waterproofing of the low roof of the existing terminal.
The project aims to make the departure terminal structurally sound. It includes renovations to make the departure terminal compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. It will install a new baggage conveyor system and repaint the arrival terminal and include other interior and exterior improvements.
CPA, though contractor ASC Corp., set a completion time of 270 days. SSFM CNMI, LLC is the construction manager. The contract amount is $1,944,610. The notice to proceed was given on June 22. A completion date is eyed for March 18, 2016.
