Salalila shines in SRCR’s May ‘Reverse’ Races
Reporter
Paul Salalila took the pole and the checkered flag in Sunday’s Saipan Radio Control Racers Association Open class race held during the group’s monthly event at the As-Lito track.
To put a spin on the latest series of races, organizers conducted the heats in reverse layout of the normal track and let the young gun class racers test their skills with the adults.
Surprisingly, a number of young guns rose to the occasion and turned in some nice performances.
Salalila still swept the Open main event in his Kyosho Ultima with a final post time of 7:06:98 that beat out Rodney Catalla’s HPI Blitz (7:27:11) and Jude Dickinson’s Team Losi XXX-SCT (7:28:01), but up-and-comer Lemmart Diaz and Franz Decena raised some eyebrows in the B-Stock Main event; both young guns raced TraXXas Slash trucks; Salalila led all 14 laps of the Open Stock-Main event.
Diaz came into the B-Main class finals as the top qualifier, but Decena stole the show in the finale with a post time of 6:25:62, crossing the line in front of James Salalila’s Kyosho Ultima and Leo Ray Salalila’s Team Associated SC10. The latter pair’s post times were not recorded.
In addition, Catalla, and his HPI Blitz, swept the Stock A-Main race, coming in as top qualifier and finishing the final in 6:07:67, ahead of Paul Salalila’s TraXXas Slash (6:28:81) and Jojo Saracho HPI Blitz pick-up. Catalla led all 13 laps, while Saracho took third seat despite lasting only 12 laps.
There are over 20 active SRCR members, and growing, which regularly take part in practices every Sunday in As Lito.
The group tries to hold a daylong monthly event in their four racing categories. The public is welcome to check out the track and learn more about the hobby.
