A 2-year-old girl was killed when a vehicle being driven by her aunt accidentally hit her while backing out of a residence in As Perdido on Thursday night.
A doctor at the Commonwealth Health Center pronounced the girl dead at 6:57pm due to head trauma, according to acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong.
The driver was a 25-year-old local woman.
Tarkong said that police officers responded on Thursday at 6:22pm to a report of an auto-pedestrian crash involving a child. The accident happened on the driveway of a residence along As Perdido Road.
Officers arrived at the scene at 6:30pm. An ambulance rushed the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency room.
Police learned that the driver was backing off her driveway in her purple 1997 Nissan Pathfinder when she accidentally struck her niece, who was standing behind the car.

Traffic investigators responded to the scene and to CHC, where they took photos.

The vehicle had no damage.

“This case is under further investigation,” Tarkong said.

Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Derek Gersonde said medics from Koblerville Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a 911 call about the accident on Thursday at 6:26pm.

Gersonde said emergency medical technicians came upon the child, who was being cradled by a family member.

Gersonde said the girl was not breathing and had a weak pulse.

While being transported to CHC, the girl’s condition deteriorated, prompting emergency medical technicians to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Upon arrival at CHC’s emergency room, CPR was continued. A doctor later pronounced the girl dead.
