Haze across Marianas comes from off-island wildfires

Share

Several wildfires across Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Northern Australia are the cause for the haze across the Marianas, according to the National Weather Service’s Forecast Office in Tiyan, Guam, yesterday.

Southwest winds are bringing this haze toward the southern hemisphere from Australia and Papua New Guinea and heading toward the Marianas.

NWS expects the haze to clear today due to the winds from a tropical disturbance moving through Chuuk.

The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. advises residents with respiratory issues and allergies to be alert for the haze outdoors as it may have an effect on them. If you experience difficulty in breathing or encounter allergies, proceed to the Commonwealth Health Center emergency room or call 234-8950.

Although this haze is no threat to the CNMI, residents and visitors are advised to listen and stay informed for the latest statements and forecasts from the NWS and the CNMI Emergency Operations Center. Keep alert for any statements from local officials or call the CNMI Emergency Operations Center at (670) 237-8000 or on HF single side band radio at frequency 5.205.0. (HSEM)
