Jonny’s Bar & Grill in Garapan is hosting two events by the Saipan Electronic Darts Association and the Saipan Billiards Association every Wednesday at 7pm.

Boom “Bang” Cruz and Ray Matsunaga swept their way to top the double-elimination round darts and billiards tournaments. Both went undefeated.

Cruz, who had a first round bye, opened his bid with a win over Alfred Muna then followed it up with victories over K.J. Villagomez and Erwin Clavecillas, who had to beat Jun Santos in the loser’s bracket.

Cruz downed Clavecillas to make it two in a row against his finals opponent to clinch the $70 top prize with a trophy and SEDA shirt. Clavecillas settled for the $40 runner-up purse.

It was the same scenario in billiards with Matsunaga besting Boyet Sequioco in the finals after also beating him in the third round.

Matsunaga also scored wins over Joseph Achas and Rey Pinangay, while Sequioco defeated Nolan Cultura and Warlee Ellama before dropping to the loser’s bracket with the third round loss.

Sequioco had to beat Nolan Cultura in the loser’s bracket in order to arrange a finals showdown with Matsunaga, who went home with $50 and a trophy. Sequioco won $30 and an SBA shirt.

SEDA and SBA secretary Warlee Ellama said they decided to hold the two events since most of the participating bars in both leagues are still closed since power is not yet fully restored.

Almost all of the island’s power lines were downed when Typhoon Soudelor passed by Saipan. Power has not yet been fully restored on the island for 47 days now.

Electricity is slowly being restored with the combined efforts of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., and the Guam Power Authority.

“We want the darts and billiards players to continue playing but we could not start with the respective new seasons since other bars have still no electricity,” said Ellama.

The one-day, double-elimination round weekly events are both organized by Pacific Amusement Inc. in cooperation with MARPAC, Budweiser, and Bud Light.
