With the goal of providing relief to survivors of Typhoon Soudelor, Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP), his wife Andrea Sablan, and friends teamed up with Karidat Social Services in a privately-organized effort to deliver food, butane, and other supplies to families and individuals in need. Altogether, in-kind and cash donations amounted to $11,023.31.

A three-week online fundraising drive on Indiegogo.com raised $7,188 in cash donations to Karidat, exceeding the initial target goal of $5,000. Sablan and his wife also donated $3,835.31 worth of butane canisters for cooking, which Karidat distributed in care packages through the parishes of the Catholic Church and in home deliveries.

Sablan thanked all the individuals who gave generously through the online drive—more than 60 individual donors in all, many of whom reside off-island.

“Typhoon Soudelor was one of the worst natural disasters we’ve seen in decades,” he said, “and we had many friends off-island asking, ‘How can we help?’ We told them this was one way: to donate to Karidat, one of the most respected charitable organizations on the island, with a proven record of effectively providing disaster relief and services to the people who need them. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, and we thank Karidat for the great work they do.”

Karidat executive director Lauri Ogumoro also expressed her appreciation. In the days and weeks that followed Typhoon Soudelor, Karidat delivered care packages and other supplies to more than 3,000 families as part of the organization’s mass distribution program with the Catholic parishes. Hundreds more have been assisted with relief supplies since then through home visits by caseworkers and volunteers.
