Search team finds Deng’s spear gun
Five-day search efforts suspended
The multi-agency search and rescue team found Saturday the spear gun used by Jian Zhu Deng but the team later suspended the search effort with still no trace of the 51-year-old Chinese businessman.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Service Search and Rescue Unit recovered the spear gun from the lower level of the Banzai cliff line at 10:49am, according to acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong yesterday.
Tarkong said family and friends confirmed that it was indeed Deng’s spear gun.
Tarkong said the five-day search was suspended Saturday at noon.
Searches resumed Saturday morning utilizing multiple assets from DPS Police and Boating Safety Unit, DFEMS, Commonwealth Ports Authority’s harbor patrol vessels, surface swimmers, shoreline teams, and aerial searches from Naval Helicopter Squadron HSC-25.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam Lt. Clinton Graham said the search efforts that were done for five continuous days starting last Tuesday covered approximately 2,390 square miles and 220 hours.
Graham said the search was a unified effort between Saipan DPS, DFEMS, Naval Squadron HSC-25, Coast Guard Sector Guam, and U.S. Air Force Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii and Kadena Air Base, Kadena Japan.
“All agencies involved send their deepest heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Jian Zhu Deng,” said Graham in a news release.
Deng, manager of the family-owned Deng Shi Auto Shop in Garapan, reportedly went spear fishing at Banzai Cliff last Monday, Sept. 7, at 6pm, but never returned home.
Family members found Deng’s Nissan Pathfinder at Banzai Cliff the following morning, Sept. 8. The vehicle was locked.
